Judge Viorica Dodon dismissed as unfounded the action filed by Ruslan Popov, Alexandru Popov, and Maria Popov against the National Integrity Authority (ANI). The three sued ANI, requesting the annulment of the fiscal audit for the farm registered in the name of the former prosecutor's father. The decision is subject to appeal at the Chișinău Court of Appeal within 30 days from the pronouncement of the ruling. In November 2023, Ruslan Popov lost the case against the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJM). Popov sued CIJM after journalists from the Anticoruptie.md portal exposed his business in Mileştii Mici, which he managed but was registered in his father's name, a pensioner over 70 years old. As a result of these investigations, the National Integrity Authority audited the former prosecutor's assets, and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal case for illicit enrichment.
Ruslan Popov, Alexandru Popov, and Maria Popov requested the annulment of points 2 and 3 of the finding act no. 321/17 of September 30, 2021. These points refer to the notification of the State Tax Service to conduct a fiscal audit of the farm of Alexandru Popov, the former prosecutor's father. Additionally, the integrity inspector ordered Popov to submit rectified declarations.
Detained at the beginning of October 2021, Popov was in pre-trial detention for almost 30 days in the National Anti-Corruption Center's isolator.
Initially, the Chișinău Court ordered his placement under house arrest, but a few days later, the Chișinău Court of Appeal granted the anti-corruption prosecutors' request to place him in the isolator.
Subsequently, the Chișinău Court of Appeal modified the lower court's decisions regarding Popov, extending his house arrest. Prosecutor Popov was suspended from office during the investigation, and in March 2021, he submitted a resignation request, which was accepted.
Ruslan Popov pleads not guilty.
