Charged with illicit enrichment and false public declarations, a case initiated following investigations by the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJM), former prosecutor Ruslan Popov now has a clear path to legal practice. On Tuesday, June 25, Judge Viorica Dodon approved his application against the Ministry of Justice, which had refused in 2023 to grant him a license to practice law. In November 2023, Ruslan Popov, who also served as the deputy of former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, lost the case against the CIJM. Popov sued the CIJM after journalists from the Anticoruptie.md Portal exposed his business in Mileștii Mici, which he managed but was registered under his father's name, a pensioner over 70 years old. As a result of these investigations, the National Integrity Authority checked the former prosecutor's assets, and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal case for illicit enrichment.
Detained at the beginning of October 2021, Popov was held in preventive detention for almost 30 days in the National Anti-Corruption Center's isolation facility.
Initially, the Chișinău Court ordered his placement under house arrest, but a few days later, the Chișinău Court of Appeal upheld the anti-corruption prosecutors' request to place him in the isolation facility.
Subsequently, the Chișinău Court of Appeal modified the lower court's decisions regarding Popov, extending his house arrest. Prosecutor Popov was suspended from office during the investigation, and in March 2021, he submitted a request to leave the system, which was accepted.
Ruslan Popov pleads not guilty.
