Former President of Moldova Igor Dodon faces court over alleged criminal misconduct .The examination of the "Energocom" file continues

The former President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, appeared before a court on Friday as the examination of the "Energocom" file continued. In the file, Dodon is accused of exceeding his duties in the interest of a criminal group. The schemes used were exposed in investigations by the Center for Journalistic Investigations in 2008. Dodon has denied the accusations against him.

Dodon was accompanied by one of his defenders and greeted by a group of supporters outside the court. The "Energocom" file, in which Dodon is a suspect, was sent to court for examination on September 9, 2022. He is charged with the crime of exceeding his duties as a person with a position of public dignity in the interest of an organized criminal group. The accusations refer to his actions from 2008-2009 when he held the position of First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Trade.

According to the prosecutors, "Igor Dodon is accused that, from the position he had at that time, holding the position of First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Trade, during May 2008 he signed the opinion that favored the conclusion by the general director of SA "Energocom" with a foreign company from Hungary, of a contract regarding the procurement of electricity for the Republic of Moldova, in a volume of 2 320 000 000 kw/h, for the period of May 2008 - June 2009, contrary to the legal provisions that concerned the activity at that time the central public energy administration authority in the person of the Ministry of Economy and Trade, and in particular the functional attributions of the Minister of Economy and Trade."

The contract, which was concluded with the foreign company, stated that the price of electricity for the period from May to September 2008 would be 0.053 US dollars per 1 kw/h and 0.058 US dollars per 1 kw/h for the electricity delivered between October 2008 and June 2009.
