The former deputy general prosecutor, Igor Popa, is expected to appear at the Chisinau Court, central office, to complete preparations for the case in which he is seeking damages from the state in the amount of 200 thousand lei. Popa was detained on November 9, 2021, and a criminal case for illicit enrichment was filed against him. The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office initiated the criminal case based on a journalistic investigation by the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIJM) about his luxury apartment in a select block in Chisinau. At the same time, a case in which Popa is accused of making false statements is pending at the Central Court.

Popa is demanding 200 thousand lei to "repair the damage caused by the illegal actions of the criminal investigation and preliminary investigation bodies, the prosecutor's office, and the courts." The former prosecutor claims that when he left the system, he was not paid the one-time compensation which prosecutors are entitled to, due to files submitted in his name.

The first court hearing in the civil case filed by Igor Popa was scheduled for January 30 of this year, but it did not proceed as planned. After six other court hearings were postponed, including the last one on April 7, the case is still ongoing.

Anti-corruption prosecutor Petru Iarmaliuc, who is handling the case on behalf of Igor Popa, has been invited to the trial as an accessory appellant. At the last court hearing in the case in which Igor Popa is accused of making false statements, magistrate Djeta Chistol granted Iarmaliuc's request for recusal, which was submitted by the defendant. The case contains five charges, and the criminal investigation was initiated in November 2021 on the basis of reasonable suspicion that Popa had made false statements. He was accused of intentionally not including some data in the declarations of wealth and personal interests for the period 2018-2020, namely information about properties owned by his concubine, which constituted their shared living space.
