CIJM Summer School: A New Dimension of Investigative Journalism

Between August 2-4, the Center for Investigative Journalism from Moldova (CIJM), in collaboration with the  Association for Independent Press (API), organized the Summer School for journalists  enrolled in the Investigative Journalists Network. The participants were trained in several work sessions on current topics, addressing new challenges in the field of reference. Journalists, prosecutors, and experts in professional ethics and cadastre served as trainers, sharing their experiences and insights. The summer school received support from the "Strengthening​ of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Mechanisms in the Republic of Moldova" project, co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) Moldova.

The work sessions targeted several important aspects for an investigative journalist, including accessing databases and documenting companies, identifying investigation subjects on corruption issues, the new provisions of the Law on access to information, and the importance of fact-checking in the development and writing of press inquiries.

At the opening of the Summer School, the president of CIJM, Cornelia Cozonac, noted that the contribution of investigative journalists to the development of sustainable democracy in the country is undeniable, and their mission is more important than ever. Simultaneously, the representative of the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) in the Republic of Moldova, Corneliu Omelian, as well as that of API, Ion Mazur, wished the participants much success in their desire to improve their skills.

In the role of trainers, the following individuals participated: Viorica Zaharia from the Press Council, journalist Ion Preașcă from RISE Moldova and Mold Street, Ilie Gulca, investigative journalist from TV8, Sergiu Bozianu, jurist, Dumitru Stoianov, journalist from RISE Moldova, Natalia Vasilendiuc, university professor at the Faculty of Journalism, University of Bucharest, and Nicolae Crăciun, expert in cadastre and geospatial data.

The special guest of the Summer School was the interim deputy prosecutor in the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, Vasile Plevan. The prosecutor discussed the corruption cases investigated by the institution and answered the journalists' questions.

The Network of Investigative Journalists from Moldova is administered by the Journalistic Investigation Center for Investigative journalism from Moldova, in collaboration with the Independent Press Association, with the support of the project "Strengthening​ of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Mechanisms in the Republic of Moldova," co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) Moldova.
