Central Election Commission registered 24 initiative groups to collect signatures in favor of potential candidates for presidential elections in Moldova. Deadline for registration of initiative groups was yesterday. If all initiative groups collect 15 thousand signatures necessary for registration in the presidential elections from October 30, 2016, we will have 24 candidates, of which 14 are independent candidates. Seven candidates in presidential elections are women.

The candidates are: Andrei Nastase, candidate nominated by the Party Platform Dignity and Truth,  Maia Sandu, nominated by the Party Action and Solidarity, Iurie Leanca, nominated by the European People’s Party in Moldova, Igor Dodon nominated by the Party of Socialists in Moldova, Marian Lupu,  nominated by the Democratic Party, Mihai Ghimpu, nominated by the Liberal Party, Dumitru Ciubasenco,  nominated by Our Party, Ana Gutu, nominated by Party Dreapta (“The Right”), Mihail Garbuz, nominated by the Party Patriotii Moldovei and Inna Popenco, nominated by the Republican Social-Political Movement Ravnopravie.  The independent candidates are Vadim Brinzan, Silvia Radu, Anatol Plugaru, Geta Savitchi, Vasile Tarlev, Maia Laguta, Ilie Rotaru, Vitalia Pavlicenco, Ion Dron, Valeriu Ghiletchi, Oleg Brega, Roman Mihaes, Mihai Corj and Artur Croitor.

Meanwhile, Oleg Brega announced in a video posted on his Facebook page that he withdraws from the race because of the conditions and of some opponents as Marian Lupu.

Today, the Central Election Commission announced that the first officially registered presidential candidate is Marian Lupu, who within a day after the registration of the initiative brought lists with 29 thousand signatures in his support. Performance has been criticized by many opponents of the Democrat MP, who said that it was impossible to collect a large number of signatures in a short time.

Also, the representative of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase was supposed to submit the lists with signatures at the CEC. He renounced as documents cannot be submitted on Saturday.

"We announced media representatives that we will submit the lists with signatures to the CEC. It was the intention of the head of the Electoral Commission to submit today, Saturday, the documents. Why was it necessary to submit the documents on Saturday? In order to legalize Lupu and Plahotniuc, who submitted the documents on Saturday September 3, a day when CEC was not entitled to register candidates for the post of president. They want to be the first in all lists", said Andrei Nastase.
