The Prosecutor Evaluation Commission (Vetting Commission) has issued a vote of confidence for Octavian Iachimovschi, the acting deputy chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, while raising concerns regarding the financial integrity of prosecutor Alexandru Cernei. The differing outcomes emerged during public hearings held on Monday as part of the vetting process for prosecutors working in specialized structures.

During the hearings, the Commission stated that no concerns had been identified regarding Iachimovschi’s financial or ethical integrity. “The vetting process is complex and puts pressure on every prosecutor,” said Iachimovschi, who is also a candidate in the competition for the position of chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office.

In the case of Alexandru Cernei, the Commission raised several questions related to his financial integrity. Cernei offered explanations and requested that all arguments presented—both in writing and during the hearing—be taken into account.

The evaluation of both prosecutors began in 2024, when they were officially notified and asked to submit declarations of assets and personal interests for the past five years, along with a questionnaire on ethical integrity. Both complied within the deadline and also submitted additional materials requested by the Commission.

Octavian Iachimovschi responded to 36 questions, covering 105 points of clarification, and submitted documents in response to 64 additional requests. For Alexandru Cernei, the evaluation involved 33 questions (62 points of clarification) and 41 additional document requests.

To assess the financial and ethical integrity of the two prosecutors, the Commission consulted 33 institutions and open sources in Iachimovschi’s case and 30 in Cernei’s.

The hearings were conducted by Panel B of the Vetting Commission, composed of Virginia Moraru (panel chair), national member Cornel Lebedinschi, and international member Irmantas Mikelionis. In the interest of transparency, video recordings of the hearings will be published within three days on the Commission’s official website – www.vettingmd.org – and on its YouTube channel.
