The U.S. Embassy in Moldova shows concern over the decision dated June 19 of the Chisinau Court of invalidation of the mayoral elections in Chisinau and regards it as a “troubling development that is even now eroding Moldovan citizen’s confidence in the democratic process”.

„ The most fundamental principal of a democratic state is the right of the people to select their own leadership. Yesterday’s unexpected and nontransparent invalidation of the popular election for Chisinau mayor, which yielded a clear victor, is a troubling development that is even now eroding Moldovan citizen’s confidence in the democratic process. The United States is closely examining the details surrounding this decision and we are working with our partners in civil society and in the diplomatic community to ensure that true democratic values prevail”, reads the message of the US Embassy posted on Facebook.

We remind that on Tuesday, June 19, after two delays, the mayoral mandate of Andrei Nastase, the candidate who won the majority of votes in the June 3 elections, was not validated. The decision was ruled by Magistrate Rodica Berdilo from the Centru District Court Chisinau after more than three hours of deliberation. The hearing was held closed-door.
