More than 158,000 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship residing in the Republic of Moldova voted on Sunday in the presidential elections of Romania — nearly 70,000 more than in the first round, where Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) leader George Simion faced off against independent candidate Nicușor Dan. In Romania, voter turnout was also unprecedented, with over 11.6 million voters — 2 million more than in the first round.
At 9:00 PM Romanian time, the polls closed after three days of voting. Voter turnout reached 64.72% by the time all polling stations in the country and abroad had closed — more than 11 percentage points higher than in the first round. A total of 9.99 million votes were cast within the country, 1.4 million more than in the first round. In the diaspora, there were 1.64 million votes. In total, as of 9:00 PM, there were 11,641,742 votes cast both domestically and abroad, according to Romanian media.
In the Republic of Moldova, 64 polling stations were opened.
Exit polls show Nicușor Dan as the winner. The first official exit poll results indicate a difference of nearly 10% between Nicușor Dan and George Simion after the polls closed, according to the website of the Permanent Electoral Authority.
