Ion Munteanu, procuror general

President Maia Sandu is expected to appoint two judges to the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ). One of them is the current Prosecutor General, Ion Munteanu.

The Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) has proposed to President Maia Sandu the appointment of Ion Munteanu, the current Prosecutor General, and lawyer Leonid Chirtoacă as judges of the SCJ.

The two candidates received the highest scores in the competition organized by the SCM — 76.5 and 76 points, respectively.

The other three candidates who applied for the SCJ judge position — Ruslan Berzoi (33 points), Aliona Ciocanu (49 points), and Ludmila Bolocan (50 points) — did not obtain the required score to pass the competition.

Ion Munteanu was appointed acting Prosecutor General in October 2022. He replaced Dumitru Robu, whose mandate expired. In the competition, he received the highest score — 9.21 — in the interview conducted by the Superior Council of Prosecutors and was subsequently appointed by President Maia Sandu.

In 2024, the Prosecutor General declared income of over 667,000 lei from the General Prosecutor’s Office. He also received around 60,000 lei for travel expenses and a scholarship from the Technical University of Moldova (UTM), where he is pursuing a master’s degree.

The Munteanu family lives in a private house of over 105 square meters, donated to his wife in 2017.

Last year, the family also purchased a 0.05-hectare plot of agricultural land for 6,000 euros. In total, the family owns three such plots and one residential plot donated to Munteanu’s wife in 2017.

In the family garage are two Mercedes vehicles and a Dacia Duster. In March 2024, Ion Munteanu sold a 2015 Dacia Duster for 190,000 lei and purchased a newer model of the same brand for 215,000 lei.
