Who is the only candidate admitted to public interview for the seat of judge at the Constitutional Court

Veaceslav Zaporojan, assistant judge at the Constitutional Court is the only candidate who has passed the written test for the vacant seat of judge at the High Court. He gained 54 points from 65 possible, the minimum standard score is 45 points, runs a press release from the Government. Attending the contest were 5 out of 7 registered candidates.  

The public interview will be held on November 27, 2015. Meanwhile, the committee for selecting candidates calls on all media institutions, public and private institutions that hold relevant information and believe that it should be known by committee members until final decision with reference to the candidate admitted to public interview, to submit it to the Secretariat by e-mail to [email protected].

Teo Carnat, member of the Superior Council of Magistracy, Vladimir Grosu, former Minister of Justice, Ion Creanga, Parliament's Secretariat Chief of Legal Direction Ion Creanga,   Eugen Rusu, former Attorney General's Assistant, the lawyer Mihai Corj,  Valentin Timbaliuc, Presidential Adviser and Veaceslav Zaporojan, assistant-judge at the Constitutional Court applied for the vacant seat of judge at the Constitutional Court.

Mandate of the magistrate Petru Railean ended in October 2014. In that period and several months later, the NGOs called on the Government to urgently initiate a transparent contest for the appointment of judges at the Constitutional Court. They demanded the public hearing of the candidates, adoption of a decision stating the reasons why a particular candidate was selected and the publication of the decision.

Former Justice Minister Vladimir Grosu told us a few months ago that he held negotiations with political leaders, including with Vlad Filat and the former PM Chiril Gaburici. Yet, his warnings were ignored. "The discussions lasted for about 3 hours but nothing happened. The process has stalled”, said the former minister.

Coincidentally or not, the former Liberal-Democrat PM Valeriu Strelet announced about the set-up of the commission mandated to appoint a candidate, on the day when the PLDM filed a complaint to the Constitutional Court on lifting the parliamentary immunity of Vlad Filat.
