In the Republic of Moldova, a specialized structure will be created to combat propaganda and disinformation, following the model of several European Union (EU) countries. This structure will work alongside the Supreme Security Council. President Maia Sandu made this statement in an interview on ProTV.
"Disinformation, manipulation, and cyber-attacks are among the risks that we must combat. These threats to the security of the Republic of Moldova are generated by the hybrid war in the context of the war waged by Russia in Ukraine," said Maia Sandu. According to the head of state, this new, special structure, in addition to the CSS and following the model of several EU states, will be more efficient in combating Russian disinformation. Measures will be taken in the near future to provide opportunities to act more coherently and seriously at the state level.
In March, the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, announced in a program on Radio Moldova that a separate entity, specialized in monitoring and combating disinformation and propaganda actions in the online environment, would be created.
Disinformation and fake news were the main tools used by the Kremlin to operate in the Republic of Moldova through television, newspapers, online media, and social networks it owns or controls through intermediaries.
The Center for Investigative Journalism has shown, through several press investigations, how media outlets that propagate misinformation regroup and reappear under different names, even after their licenses have been revoked or they have been closed. Investigations also revealed the sources of funding, the mechanisms of promotion, including social networks or other media, and how propaganda messages circulate, especially in the context of Russia's war in Ukraine. More details can be found in the press investigations titled "The “9 lives” of TV channels of Shor and PSRM parties" "Matryoshkas" of Russian propaganda in the Republic of Moldova: puppets and puppeteers” and "Başcaniada: The Russian Offensive for the Leadership of the Gagauz Autonomy."
