Other 6 candidates kick off presidential campaign

Other 6 candidates for presidential elections requested to the Central Electoral Commission registration of initiative groups in their support in elections due on October 30, 2016. Most of them are independent candidates. Anticoruptie.md portal continues to present profiles of candidates in presidential elections.

Valeriu Ghiletchi, independent candidate

Valeriu Ghiletchi was the first to announce that he will run as independent candidate in presidential elections. "It is my decision to run and I think I've shown that I am independent. I do not want to play the games of anyone. I want to be a candidate for the Republic of Moldova", he said in mid-August. Currently, Ghiletchi is independent MP in Parliament. Also, he was MP in the period 1998-2001. In 2009, he was elected Liberal Democrats’ MP, but he was excluded from the parliamentary faction of PLDM in April, 2016. His party colleagues invoked non-compliance with some decisions of the party.

According to the 2014 statement on income, the politician's family owns two houses, a commercial facility and a plot in Chisinau. Also, the MP has a Nissan Terrano 2001, which he bought in 2012 at the price of 5,000 lei, write the documents. He owns shares in two companies: Invest Credit and IC Management Institute, which he founded. Ghiletchi is  bachelor of Theology; he was President of the European Baptist Federation (2009-2011) and Bishop of the Union of Christian Evangelical Baptist Churches in Moldova (2001-2009).

Mihai Corj, independent candidate

Mihai Corj is doctor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law of the Nistrian Institute of Economy and Law. Since October 2015, he is president of NGO, Institute for Legislative Creation "Lex Scripta". In spring 2016, he released the book titled "I am a simple citizen & through science and faith to truth", a study on the interpretation and application of Law as science. Corj was among the seven candidates for seat of judge of the Constitutional Court, which was vacant since October 2014. Special competition committee established by the Government Strelet selected Veaceslav Zaporojan as magistrate; his candidacy was approved by the Government on July 6.

Artur Croitor, independent candidate

Artur Croitor is entrepreneur and president of the Association of Small and Medium Business “Lumea Liberă” (Free World). 

Ion Dron, independent candidate

He is a lawyer and president of the public association "Center of public authorities’ initiative and monitoring " who conducts research in Justice and Human Rights. Last year, he announced his intention to run independently for the seat of mayor of Chisinau.  He failed to collect the required number of signatures. Dron was Sergiu Mocanu’s defender, chairman of the People’s Movement Antimafie. Sergiu Mocanu was criminally investigated after the events from April 7, 2009.  

Ana Gutu, candidate of  Party Dreapta

Ana Guțu was elected MP in the Liberal Party in 2009. She was expelled from the party along with other 6 liberal colleagues, after the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu refused to vote with a new pro-European government in 2013. Then, the seven MPs voted with the new Cabinet of Ministers headed by Iurie Leanca and then they founded the Liberal Reformism Party (PLR) and Gutu was elected co-chairperson of the party. One year later, she was excluded from this faction, along with other 3 colleagues, after they signed an appeal urging the party to withdraw from the race for parliamentary elections, as the results of the polls showed victory of PLDM, PD and PL. On September 5, 2015, Ana Gutu and an initiative group created political party Dreapta, a party that opts for the reunification of Moldova and Romania.

She is philologist by profession. Also, she is prime vice-rector of the Free International University of Moldova, for which, in 2013 she has been suspected of conflict of interest by the National Integrity Commission.  She said to journalists from Moldovacurata.md that she had a cumulative salary from the activity of teacher, which is not prohibited by law.

Oleg Brega, independent candidate

Oleg Brega is known by the public as a journalist and civic activist, member and former president of the non-governmental organization "Hyde Park" and editor of the portal Curaj.tv. In 2010-2013, he was host of the show "Public Enemy” on Jurnal TV and co-presenter of the entertainment show "Ministry of Truth".

In November 2014, Oleg Brega was registered in the race for parliamentary elections.  He got only 2% of votes.  In 2015, the activist joined the race for mayor of Chisinau and gained 1.37% of votes.
