After Great Britain and the USA imposed sanctions on political leaders who are currently abroad, Ilan Șor and Vlad Plahotniuc, the authorities in Chisinau requested similar measures from the European Council. The President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, made statements to this effect, indicating that the request was submitted during a meeting with European parliamentarians who were on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova.

According to Igor Grosu, more drastic measures are necessary against politicians who have left the Republic of Moldova and are under criminal investigation, as they are behind subversive actions aimed at destabilizing the socio-political situation. Several aspects related to Chisinau's request to impose sanctions on individuals who are assisting Moscow in destabilizing the political situation in the Republic of Moldova were discussed with European parliamentarians.

"They asked me how they could help in the fight against oligarchs who have joined hands with the Russian secret services and are attempting to destabilize the situation in the Republic of Moldova. I told them that the best thing to do is to create a set of sanctions, following the model of the USA and Great Britain, against the two individuals, namely Șor and Plahotniuc, and those who are aiding them," noted Igor Grosu for Prime.

On Tuesday, at the EU Council for Foreign Affairs in Brussels, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, urged the EU to impose sanctions against the fugitive oligarchs.

According to the Moldovan official, not only did the fugitive politicians steal from the Republic of Moldova for years, but they are also currently trying to destabilize the government and sabotage the EU accession process.

"It is crucial for us to have the support of the European Union in sanctioning corrupt political oligarchs who, along with Russia, are attempting to destabilize the Republic of Moldova. The US and UK have already implemented sanctions on individuals, which is why it is important for the EU to do the same," said the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu.
